Configuration Experiment #T1
Goal
The goal of this experiment is to help you understand the time dimension in calculation mechanics. For this challenge, you will use a demo workspace and alter the configuration. When asked to write down something, please copy the value to a document (along with the step #), as you will be using those values later on.
Difficulty
Easy.
Steps
- Create a demo workspace
- Go to Calculations > All Calculations
- Delete the calculation
- Start a new calculation for Sales Manager Compensation using the default period
- Start another calculation for Sales Manager Compensation for the same period
- Are calculated amounts the same or different?
- Do you see a purple bar?
- What does it say when you click on it?
- Do you understand the other potential calculation issue listed?
- How would you cause those issues to happen?
- Delete one of the duplicate calculations
- Release rewards on the remaining calculation
- Start another calculation for Sales Manager Compensation for the same period
- Are calculated amounts the same?
- Why is the new amount zero?
- What is the deduction amount for?
- Continue experimenting and running calculations until you can trigger all 4 types of issues
- Old unreleased calculations
- Duplicate calculations
- Overlapping calculations
- Calculation gaps
Key Learnings
- The purple bar reports improper calculation sequences
- 4 types of issues are detected
- Deductions occur when there is a prior duplicate or overlapping calculation
- The prior calculation MUST be released for deductions to kick in
- There are cases where deductions are in fact valid
- Ex: YTD plan which constantly re-evaluate commissions, because deal amounts or deal effective dates change. Those types of plans re-calculate YTD commissions, but deduct what has been paid before
