Configuration Experiment #T1

Configuration Experiment #T1

Goal
The goal of this experiment is to help you understand the time dimension in calculation mechanics. For this challenge, you will use a demo workspace and alter the configuration. When asked to write down something, please copy the value to a document (along with the step #), as you will be using those values later on.

Difficulty
Easy.

Steps
  1. Create a demo workspace
  2. Go to Calculations > All Calculations
  3. Delete the calculation
  4. Start a new calculation for Sales Manager Compensation using the default period
  5. Start another calculation for Sales Manager Compensation for the same period
    1. Are calculated amounts the same or different?
  6. Do you see a purple bar?
    1. What does it say when you click on it?
    2. Do you understand the other potential calculation issue listed?
    3. How would you cause those issues to happen?
  7. Delete one of the duplicate calculations
  8. Release rewards on the remaining calculation
  9. Start another calculation for Sales Manager Compensation for the same period
    1. Are calculated amounts the same?
    2. Why is the new amount zero?
    3. What is the deduction amount for?
  10. Continue experimenting and running calculations until you can trigger all 4 types of issues
    1. Old unreleased calculations
    2. Duplicate calculations
    3. Overlapping calculations
    4. Calculation gaps

Key Learnings
  • The purple bar reports improper calculation sequences
    • 4 types of issues are detected
  • Deductions occur when there is a prior duplicate or overlapping calculation
    • The prior calculation MUST be released for deductions to kick in
  • There are cases where deductions are in fact valid
    • Ex: YTD plan which constantly re-evaluate commissions, because deal amounts or deal effective dates change. Those types of plans re-calculate YTD commissions, but deduct what has been paid before
